Traditional Ceramics

Shape clay by hand, guided by a master ceramicist, and leave with a piece you made yourself.

The craft

Clay, shaped the way it has been here for centuries

Pottery is one of Tunisia’s oldest living crafts. In this session you work by hand, wedging, pinching and shaping the clay, guided step by step by an experienced ceramicist who has spent a lifetime at the wheel and the workbench.

No two pieces are ever the same, and that is the point. You try to shape the clay to your intention, but it often takes a form of its own. As in life, you cannot fully control the final result, and learning to accept that brings a lightness and peace of mind many of us miss in everyday life.

Why it’s good for you

Three hours that reset you

No. 1

Active meditation

Shaping the clay demands your full attention, and working with your hands has been shown to calm the nervous system and lower stress. Racing thoughts quiet down; many describe it as meditation you can hold.

No. 2

Focus you feel

The tactile, absorbing nature of the work pulls you into a state of flow, attention on one task instead of a dozen open tabs. It is the antidote to always-on, digital fatigue.

No. 3

Letting go of perfect

Clay is unpredictable and will not be controlled, and learning to accept that is quietly freeing. You leave a little more at ease with imperfection, in your work and beyond.
